Hello Roses,

Welcome to another week, and another blog. This week I want to talk about the bond between woman and her shoes. The phrase “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world” is sitting in front of me on my desk and I’ve decided to explore that topic. What makes a woman fall in love with her shoes?

What makes you fall in love with shoes?

Research has shown that the chemicals dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin are released when women purchase a pair of shoes. These are powerful and addictive chemicals which leave us wanting more. More psychology reveals that the literal change in height when you were high heels gives women an extra boost of confidence and feeling of power. Much like a man with a new suit. And then there’s the concept of shape. I’m not sure about you, but I could just look at a pair of heels all day. The sturdy heel, falling effortlessly into the sweeping curve of the sole giving way to the form of your foot. From a course I did in London on Footwear Design, I know that curve is called the ‘feather line’ which I think gives it an extra feeling of elegance. And then there are the uppers. This is where designers can really be creative. New shapes, lines and fabrics can change even a court shoe into something explosive, elegant and empowering.

Sex and the City’s Influence:

Popular luxury brands Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo were thrown into the spotlight thanks to Carrie Bradshaw’s shoe obsession in Sex and the City. In one episode Carrie is mugged on the street and she cannot believe it when the thief asks for her Manolo Blahnik’s. In another episode, we see the iconic lilac feather peep toe sandals by Jimmy Choo earning them a place in the shoe hall of fame. Since then, it has become socially acceptable to be obsessed with shoes (so for that Carrie, we thank you). So much so in fact, that one woman is being sued by her husband for her shoe collection amid their divorce. He sees them as assets which will only appreciate over time (although she does have collection worth £640,000).

My thoughts for Lucy Rose:

For me, shoes are what literally carry you throughout the day. Due to the fact one generally has fewer pairs of shoes than items of clothing, they are easier to bond with. High heels in particular offer me great satisfaction in their shape and their versatility. If I have a good pair of shoes on, I know that I will feel more confident, empowered and elegant. So, a promise from me to you, give a girl a pair of Lucy Rose shoes, and she will be able to conquer the world!
